Remove Image Metadata

Every photo your phone takes carries more than the picture: where you were, what took it, when, and often which software touched it last. This removes all of it and gives the image back in the same format. For JPG, PNG and WebP nothing is re-compressed, so the picture you get back is pixel-for-pixel the one you uploaded.

How to remove image metadata

  1. Step 1

    Add your files

Drag up to 20 JPG, PNG, WebP, TIFF, BMP or HEIC files into the box, or choose them from your device. Each can be up to 50 MB.

  2. Step 2

    Choose your settings

Optional settings are under Advanced options; the starting values suit most files.

  3. Step 3

    Press Remove metadata

The work happens on our servers, and you can follow its progress.

  4. Step 4

    Download the result

Each file comes back in the format it went in; several come together in a ZIP. Your upload is already deleted, and the result is deleted after one hour.

Worth knowing

The colour profile is kept by default, because removing it changes how the colours are displayed; there is a setting for taking it too. An image whose EXIF says 'rotate on display' has to be saved again so the picture stays the right way up, which for a JPG, WebP or HEIC costs a little quality — every other image is returned without its pixels being touched.

Why remove image metadata?

  • Taking the GPS coordinates off a photo before posting it publicly
  • Removing camera serial numbers and owner names before selling a listing photo
  • Clearing author, software and edit history from images going into a document
  • Cleaning a batch of images in one go before handing them to a client
