Redact an Image

Cover up a name, a face, a signature or an address before you share a picture. Black out removes the pixels under the box for good; pixelate blurs them into a coarse mosaic that keeps the photo looking natural while hiding the detail. The file comes back in the format it arrived in, with its metadata stripped by default — and the small preview a camera embeds of the original photo is removed either way, so it cannot leak what you hid.

How to redact an image

  1. Step 1

    Add your files

Drag up to 20 JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, BMP or TIFF files into the box, or choose them from your device. Each can be up to 50 MB.

  2. Step 2

    Mark the area to hide

Drag the box over what you want to hide, or type its position and size in pixels, then choose Black out to remove it for good, or Pixelate to blur it into blocks.

  3. Step 3

    Press Redact images

The work happens on our servers, and you can follow its progress.

  4. Step 4

    Download the result

Each file comes back in the format it went in; several come together in a ZIP. Your upload is already deleted, and the result is deleted after one hour.

Worth knowing

Black out is the one that truly removes the content — the pixels under the box are gone and nothing in the file can rebuild them. Pixelate obscures rather than erases, so for anything sensitive choose black out. In a batch, the rectangle is measured on the first image and the same part of every other image is hidden, which is predictable when the images are the same size and not what you want when they are not. A TIFF with several pages comes back as its first page only.

Why redact an image?

  • Blacking out a name or an account number on a screenshot
  • Pixelating a face or a number plate in a photo
  • Hiding a signature or an address before sharing a document scan
  • Covering the same corner across a batch of images at once
